Located in the Baroque home of Otto Nicolai, founder of Vienna's world famous Philharmonic Orchestra, the Haus der Musik is the city's first attempt to put classical music into an accessible contemporary exhibition setting. The emphasis is very much on the interactive, with high-tech installations enabling visitors to experience sound phenomena visually and acoustically and a 'Virtual Conductor' providing the opportunity to conduct the might of the Philharmonic. More conventional displays monitor the history of Vienna's most illustrious composers accompanied by high quality soundbites and a museum shop offers a wide range of CDs and souvenirs.
